No. A gas boiler can only be serviced legally by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register, whatever its make. That includes Worcester Bosch. Beyond the legal minimum, there are good reasons to choose carefully.
The legal part
Work on gas appliances in Great Britain must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. That covers installation, repairs and servicing. If someone who is not registered opens up a gas boiler, they are breaking the law, and you may be putting your household at risk. You also risk your home insurance and your boiler guarantee.
To check an engineer, ask to see their Gas Safe ID card, and look up their number on the Gas Safe Register. The back of the card lists the types of gas work they are qualified for.
The guarantee part
Worcester Bosch sets conditions for its guarantees. In general they expect the boiler to be installed by a competent person, registered, and serviced regularly in line with the manufacturer's instructions. If your guarantee is an extended one, check its terms for the service requirements, and keep the paperwork from every service. Some cover can be affected if a service was missed.
Terms vary by product and change over time, so look at the documents that came with your boiler, or ask your installer.
What a good service covers
A proper service is more than a quick look. It typically includes:
- visual checks of the boiler and its connections
- checking the flue and ventilation
- combustion analysis, to test it is burning safely and efficiently
- inspecting and cleaning key components, such as the burner and heat exchanger where needed
- checking the pressure and the condensate pipe
- testing the safety devices
- a record of what was done, which you should keep
Why a specialist helps
Any Gas Safe engineer can service a boiler. An engineer who works on Worcester Bosch boilers regularly will know their common faults, have the right parts and tools, and understand the manufacturer's requirements. We are a Worcester Bosch accredited installer, as well as Gas Safe and OFTEC registered.
Questions to ask before you book a service
- Are you Gas Safe registered, and can I see your ID card?
- What is included in the service, and will I get a written record?
- Do you carry parts for my make and model?
- If something needs replacing, will you quote before you start the work?
- Does the service count towards my guarantee conditions?
If your boiler is older or out of guarantee
An older boiler still needs an annual service, and in some ways it matters more. A service gives you an honest view of its condition, so you can plan a replacement in your own time. Our guide on when to replace your boiler explains the signs.
How often
Once a year, ideally before the cold weather. Our guide on how often a boiler should be serviced covers it, including landlords' obligations.
