A boiler does not fail on a schedule. Plenty last well past 15 years, and some give up much sooner. What matters is whether it is still safe, reliable and reasonably efficient. These are the signs we look for.
Age
Most boilers are designed to last somewhere around 10 to 15 years, and well-serviced ones often go further. Past 15, parts get harder to find and breakdowns become more likely. Age alone is not a reason to replace, but it changes the maths on every repair.
Repairs are getting frequent
One repair in a decade is normal. Two or three in a couple of years is a pattern. A useful rule of thumb: if a repair costs a large part of what a new boiler would, or you are paying for repairs every winter, replacing is usually the better use of money.
Efficiency and bills
Older boilers waste more of the fuel they burn. A modern condensing boiler converts well over 90 per cent of its fuel to heat, while older non-condensing models can be well below that. If your bills have crept up and the house is not warmer for it, the boiler may be part of the answer. Other things matter too, such as insulation, radiator balance and controls, so ask for an honest look at all of it.
Signs that need attention
- Strange noises. Banging, whistling or gurgling can mean limescale, sludge or low water flow.
- A yellow or orange flame on a gas boiler (it should be crisp and blue), or soot marks around the boiler. Stop using it and call a Gas Safe engineer.
- Pilot light going out or repeated lockouts.
- Leaks or drips from the boiler body.
- Uneven heating, with cold radiators, or hot water that runs hot then cold.
- A carbon monoxide alarm sounding. Treat this as an emergency: open the windows, leave the house and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
Is it still economic to repair?
Ask your engineer three things. What is wrong, and is it one failed part or a sign of general wear? How long are parts expected to be available? And what will the repair cost against a new boiler with a guarantee?
Why choose a time that suits you
Boilers tend to fail on the coldest night of the year, when every installer is busy. Replacing one that is clearly near the end of its life in spring or summer gives you time to compare quotes, choose the right model and have the work done without pressure.
What a new boiler gives you
A new boiler brings a manufacturer guarantee, lower fuel use and modern controls. As a Worcester Bosch accredited installer, we can offer extended guarantees on eligible models when the boiler is installed and registered correctly.
If yours is showing some of these signs, get in touch. We will look at it honestly, tell you whether it is worth repairing, and if not, explain the options on our boiler installation page. For the practical side of a changeover, see what to expect during your boiler installation.
