Is Power Flushing Worth It?

Over the years, a central heating system fills with rust, sludge and scale. Water carries it around the pipes, and it settles where the flow is slowest, usually the bottom of the radiators and inside the boiler. A power flush is a deep clean that removes it. Whether it is worth doing depends on the state of your system.

What a power flush is

An engineer connects a powerful pump to the heating system and circulates water through it with a cleaning chemical. The flow is reversed and pulsed to shift debris, and radiators are tapped and flushed one by one. The dirty water is drained away, the system is rinsed and refilled, and a corrosion inhibitor is added to protect it going forward. A magnetic filter is often fitted to keep it clean.

It is much more thorough than simply draining the system, which only removes some of the dirty water.

Signs you may need one

  • Radiators cold at the bottom but hot at the top
  • Cold spots that bleeding does not cure
  • Brown or black water when you bleed a radiator
  • The heating takes a long time to warm up
  • A noisy boiler or pump, with banging or kettling sounds
  • Frequent breakdowns on an older system
  • You are about to fit a new boiler to an old system

When it is worth doing

  • Before a new boiler on an older system. Dirty water can damage a new boiler and affect its guarantee. Cleaning first protects your investment.
  • When there are clear symptoms of sludge and the radiators are otherwise in good condition.
  • Where the system has never been cleaned in many years.

When it may not be

  • A system that is already clean, for example a recent install with a filter fitted.
  • Very old or corroded radiators and pipes. A power flush can reveal weak points, and a radiator that was barely holding together can start to leak. A good engineer will assess the system first and tell you honestly if the risk is high.
  • Problems that are not sludge. A faulty pump, a failed valve or an air lock can cause similar symptoms and need a different fix.

A filter and inhibitor keep it clean

A flush without protection afterwards allows the system to silt up again. A magnetic filter catches the iron particles that cause most trouble, and inhibitor stops fresh corrosion. Both are cheap compared with the damage they prevent. Modern installation standards expect the system water to be treated, and manufacturers' guarantees often require it.

Is it worth it?

If your system shows the signs above, a power flush often restores heat and quiets the boiler, and it protects a new one. If it does not, you probably do not need one. We will tell you which applies, without pushing an unnecessary job.

We carry out power flushing as part of our heating services. If your boiler is playing up as well, see what causes a boiler to break down, or get in touch.
