There is no single figure that applies to every boiler. As a general guide, most gas boilers last 10 to 15 years, and a Worcester Bosch is no different in that respect. Plenty go beyond 15 when they are installed well and looked after. The things that decide it are mostly in your control.
What affects how long it lasts
Installation. A boiler fitted with the right pipework, a proper flue and a clean system will outlast one that was rushed. A good installer flushes the old system and fits a filter before connecting the new boiler.
Servicing. Annual servicing is the biggest single factor. Engineers catch worn parts, check combustion and keep the heat exchanger clean. Boilers that are never serviced fail earlier.
Water quality. Sludge and limescale shorten a boiler's life. Hard water is common across much of Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Norfolk, so a magnetic filter and, in some homes, scale protection are worth having.
Usage and sizing. A boiler working constantly beyond its capacity wears out faster than one matched to the home.
Controls. A boiler that cycles on and off all the time, because of poor controls or a flow temperature that is too high, ages more quickly.
The guarantee
Worcester Bosch offers longer guarantees on many of its boilers when they are fitted by an accredited installer, and when the conditions are met. Terms differ by model, so always check the specifics for the boiler you are buying. The general pattern is that a filter has to be fitted, the boiler registered and the system serviced on schedule.
A guarantee is not the same as a lifespan. It tells you how long Worcester Bosch will stand behind the boiler, not how long it will keep running.
Signs it is nearing the end
Repeated breakdowns, rising bills, leaks, noisy running and difficulty getting parts are all signs. Our guide to when to replace your boiler goes through them in detail.
Where is yours in its life?
Check these and you will have a good idea:
- Age. Look for the date on the boiler or in the paperwork.
- Repair history. Frequent call-outs are an early warning.
- Service records. A boiler with a complete history is usually in better shape.
- Behaviour. Noises, leaks, low pressure and cold radiators all matter.
- Parts. Ask your engineer whether parts for your model are still easy to get.
If several of these are worrying, a visit from an engineer, with an honest opinion, is worth having.
How to get the most from it
- Have it installed by an accredited installer, and keep the paperwork.
- Service it every year and keep the records.
- Keep an eye on the pressure gauge and top it up only if it falls.
- Bleed radiators when they have cold spots.
- Run it gently. A lower flow temperature is kinder to the boiler and cheaper to run.
